Oisín in Tír na nÓg

The legend of Oisín & Niamh is one of Ireland’s most famous stories.

It is said that Oisín, the son of Fionn MacCumhail, fell in love with a beautiful girl called Niamh, a princess from Tír na nÓg who travelled to Ireland a long, long time ago. He accepted her invitation to go with her to the land of youth which was a happy place with no pain or sorrow and where all wishes came true.

After a while Oisín missed his father deeply and told Niamh that he wished to return home to visit his father. He thought he had only been away for a few years, but in fact Oisín had spent 300 years in Tír na nÓg. Reluctantly, Niamh allowed him to return to Ireland. She gave him her white horse and warned him not to touch the soil of Ireland or else he would never return to her or to Tír na nÓg.

When he returned to Ireland, Oisín saw a group of men struggling to lift a heavy rock. He ventured over to them and offered to help. Tightly gripping the reins in one hand, he used the free hand to lift the rock with his youthful strength. However, the saddle snapped and the horse bolted resulting in Oisín falling to the ground. He touched the soil of Ireland and suddenly, he was an old man.
