Uncovering a secret agent………….
From humble beginnings as a publican’s son in Sneem William Melville’s career took off as a policeman in London in the 1890’s. As head of Scotland Yard’s Special Branch he became one of the most famous detectives of the age. He then slipped from public view into the shadowy world of espionage, operating as the spymaster known as ‘M’ (later immortalised as James Bond’s boss). In an action packed life Melville rubbed shoulders with some extraordinary characters – from anarchists to royalty, from Jack the Ripper to Harry Houdini – all of whom feature in our new exhibition.

Melville’s is just one of many fascination stories brought to life at Kerry County museum where you can trace the history of the ‘Kingdom’ from Stone Age to present day. Priceless archaeological treasures are displayed in our Museum Gallery, while a stroll through the Medieval Experience reveals the streets of Tralee as they were in 1450AD. A trek through our Antarctica Exhibition is also worthwhile as you will learn how a heroic Annascaul man, Tom Crean, played a major role in the frozen continent in the early 20th century.
