Ardfert Cathedral
![]() |
Ardfert Cathedral, 8km from Tralee on the R551, is built on the site of a monastery founded in the 6th century by St. Brendan the Navigator (484-577AD). The cathedral site contains the remains of three churches – the 12th century cathedral which incorporates the Hiberno-Romannesque west doorway of an earlier church, and to its west, Templenahoe, also of 12th century Romanesque origin, and Temple-na-Griffin which dates from the 16th century. The buildings have been undergoing painstaking conservation by the Office of Pubic Works since the 1980s. The South Transept now restored houses an exhibition of the history of the site. Guided tours are provided, 3km east of the Cathedral and visible from it are the substantial remains of Ardfert Friary founded in 1253. For more information see www.ardfert.com |
